Moving Forward
In 2001, EGA decided to develop housing for young adults exiting the foster care system. Requests for funding for construction of the building were met with enthusiasm and by the end of 2003, EGA had secured over $9.1 million in funding from governmental and private sources, and construction began in early 2004. In February 2006, EGA completed construction of Edwin Gould Residence and Multi-Service Center, the first permanent residence in New York City dedicated solely to homeless young adults who have aged out of the foster care and juvenile justice systems.
Located in East Harlem, the residence contains thirty-six studio units and fifteen one-bedroom units of safe, affordable housing for young men and women who have aged out of foster care and/or the juvenile justice systems. Residents took occupancy in March 2006, and today the building houses fifty-one formerly homeless individuals and twenty of their children. EGA also provides support and aftercare services to over 250 young men and women through the on-site Multi-Service Center and the Exodus Partnership.
